by this point, he has learned that wolfwood is dead as a result of their fight. officially joined up with vash and co. got his special boy hat and his special boy poncho and his special boy twang. cut off all his pretty hair though. :( he has fought and defeated elendira as well as made tentative peace with razlo.
and the last he sees, vash and legato are finally facing off. in an effort to force vash to choose between his pacifistic values and killing in order to save, legato uses elendira's body as a puppet to strangle livio. livio, assuming that vash will not kill legato, and accepting that he will die, eventually blacks out.
tl;dr he needs to get over his dog thing and go ask rusty very politely for his hat that he actually cares about Very Much, thank you.
